The TOPCON total
station uses an electronic distance meter for measuring distances and a
theodolite for measuring angles. It is able to measure distance and angle by
emitting a beam of infrared light (laser) toward its target. By measuring the
time it takes for the emitted laser to return, the total station can then
compute the distance to the target. The data that the TOPCON collects is then
stored into a data collector and analyzed in-house on the computer. The data
collector acts as a computer as well, allowing field personnel to compute points
in-field as necessary.
